10 things I’ll miss about my job

1. Morning meeting smackdowns, nerd style. (“In my admittedly jaundiced opinion…” “It’s hard to fathom…” “Of course, you’re familiar with the Cartesian argument…”)

2. Plastic cups of red table wine at closing night dinner.

3. Two-month deadlines.

4. Time Inc. office gossip. Juicy, juicy stuff.

5. My corporate Amex. Oh, how I’ll miss you, little green plastic friend.

6. Hanging with visiting foreign correspondents (yo, Simons, Hannah, Aryn).

7. Throngs of upward-facing tourists outside (specifically, body-slamming said tourists).

8. Pours.

9. Mentoring.

10. Free People magazine. Good-bye, Britney. Good-bye, fat Oprah. Fridays are a little dimmer now.

    The hours no longer wasted in airport terminals and nondescript hotels, the mindless banter while waiting for elevators, the mysterious flashing light on the photocopier when already five minutes late for a brain-melting meeting, the burnt coffee with stomach-churning “non-dairy creamer”… ah the corporate ladder.

    Wait ’til you take your first conference call lying in bed, then work the rest of the day on your home computer in your jammies. Lemme tell ya, the things you miss about the office will fade rather quickly. Btw, Oprah’s on a 4pm.

    Why don’t you just keep writing your blog, doesn’t have to be through TIME, and it certainly doesn’t have to be about working! I mean, who is working these days, anyway? But you’ve got a great voice, and it will be missed. I didn’t find you till recently, and now you’re leaving. Whine, whine, whine.

    You will be surprised at how little you miss your job, if you just let yourself admit it. I am in the middle of deliberately taking three months off to see what happens when “job” is out of the picture. A lot of really interesting stuff is coming up – like how much more I enjoy blogging than I do working.(and I had a really interesting job.) Things I miss about my job? Meetings – they give you time to think your own thoughts, write poetry, meditate and generally have an excuse to do precisely nothing.
