Yelp Encroaching on Groupon’s Turf?

Yelp, which has gathered a following through its postings of reviews and ratings of restaurants and other local businesses from everyday consumers, has begun testing a new feature similar to what Groupon does in that special coupons are available for purchase for a single day.

As MainStreet.com reports, Yelp is testing the feature right now in San Diego—where consumers are notified of once-a-week deals via e-mail—and if the program is deemed a success, it’s expected to spread around the country, perhaps even around the world.

Yelp and these kinds of coupons seem like a natural match to me: Consumers already use Yelp to get real insight into local establishments, and now it looks like they’ll be able to use Yelp to get discounts at some of these local establishments.
