Consumers Weigh In: Coupons Are Better Than Daily Deals for Saving

Despite the widespread popularity of flash deals from Groupon, LivingSocial, BuywithMe, and other daily deal sites, consumers understand that when it comes down to pure money-saving, coupons are still king.

This is pretty obvious, I suppose. But consumers, when forced to think about it, realize that daily deals are meant to tempt them into making impulse buys and unplanned, often impractical purchases. In a recent survey from RetailMeNot (which just so happens to be a site that features online coupons), consumers basically admit that daily deals aren’t really about saving money:

76% of people who use both coupon sites and daily deal sites believe they save more money in the long run with coupon sites. This is reflected across all income levels, regions, genders and occupations.

68% of online shoppers use daily deal sites more for impulse purchases than planned purchases, as opposed to 39% of online shoppers who use coupon sites more for impulse purchases than planned.

Of course, it’s possible to think you’re saving money from daily deals and coupon sites alike. But if the presence of a “deal” convinces you to spend money you otherwise would have saved, are you really saving anything?

L.A. Parents Pony Up For Kids’ V.I.P. Lounge Access at Sixth-Grade Dance

Most middle-school kids have better things to think about than whether or not they’re members of the 1%. But one Los Angeles charter school upped the ante on the usual social anxieties of its annual dance when it installed a “V.I.P. lounge” — with a separate cover charge. On top of the $15 dance admission, students — or, more likely, their parents — can choose to pay an additional $5 to be a cool kid — excuse me, get access to a special “V.I.P.” area.

Too Much to Drink? AAA’s ‘Tipsy Tow’ Offers Free Rides for You & Your Car This Weekend

To prevent drunk driving, AAA clubs around the country are offering free rides to folks who’ve celebrated too much to safely get behind the wheel over Memorial Day weekend. They’ll also tow your car home—again, free of charge. Amazingly, the service is available even if you’re not a AAA member.

Daily deals can be a good way to save, but the fact that you have to pay for them to get the discounts means that sometimes they might not work out the way you want them too.

I use a site that offers both: http://www.CouponMob.com. CouponMob offers Daily Steals and online shopping coupons from hundreds of top merchants. Later this year, they plan to offer one-day product sales (similar to Woot), grocery coupons and dining coupons. Membership is free.

Coupon sites are great when I already know what I need to buy. Daily deal sites are great at introducing me to try new things. I use cash back sites as well to increase my savings on both regular purchases and sites like groupon. I’d recommend http://www.cashreporter.com

Regardless of how much press Groupon and LivingSocial get, there will come a point when businesses realize that doing a deal with them is not a good business decision.

There are better options available and sites like http://www.freefu.com make advertising easy and completely free for every business from small mom and pops to large national and international companies. And for a consumer, a free coupon is usually better than a daily deal.
