As Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter reaches within a few hits of the 3,000-hit milestone, the asking price for tickets at Yankee Stadium this weekend has more than doubled—to an average of $165.
As of this instant, Yankee great Derek Jeter has a career total of 2,997 hits, only 71 of which have occurred during this subpar season, in which he’s hitting .258, well below his career .312 batting average. Despite his struggles as the plate, Jeter is by far the biggest attraction at Yankee Stadium lately. Plenty of fans would love to see Jeter reach the vaunted 3,000-hit mark (only 27 players have done so in MLB history), and apparently they’re willing to pay up to witness history, especially if it occurs in the Bronx.
Citing data from FanSnap.com, Bloomberg reports that tickets to the Rays-Yankees game on Saturday, July 9, are selling for an average of $165—up from an average asking price of just $77 one week ago. The average ticket price for Friday’s game at Yankee Statdium is also $165, while admission to Sunday’s game—the last game before the All-Star break—is running $158, on average.

Apparently, fans think it’s highly unlikely that Jeter will get the three hits necessary to reach the 3,000 mark in tonight’s series-opener versus the Rays. The average ticket is going for “just” $138. I suppose few people would be impressed if you told them, “I was there when Jeter got his 2,998th hit!”
By the way, tickets are selling for well below the average prices mentioned. According to StubHub, tickets start at just $25 for tonight’s game, then spike to a minimum of $80 for the game on Friday, July 8.
