As Brazil continues its economic and political rise, so does Sao Paulo. This year it jumped 11 spots in the survey. Brazil’s currency has strengthened significantly against the U.S. dollar, which sped its rise in the ranking.

9. Hong Kong

Steadily climbing rents have kept Hong Kong one of the most expensive cities. The supply of rental properties is reportedly extremely low, and some real estate agents estimate that rental prices have increased 20 percent, according to The Wall Street Journal.
